Navigating Property Tax Changes: How Recent County Actions Impact School Funding and Your Family

Ohio public schools depend on two primary revenue sources: state funding and local property taxes. Recent property value increases throughout 2024 resulted in higher tax collections in 2025, affecting both homeowners and school district budgets.
Understanding the Financial Landscape
Huron City Schools remains committed to delivering exceptional educational programs while exercising careful stewardship of taxpayer resources. Operating at the state-mandated minimum collection rate, our revenue naturally increased alongside rising property values. District leadership and the finance committee continually evaluate strategies to meet educational needs while remaining sensitive to the financial impact on families.
Recent County Action to Provide Tax Relief
The Erie County Commissioners recently approved a measure designed to ease homeowner tax burden. By "piggybacking" the state's existing property tax rollback program for owner-occupied and homestead-eligible properties, the county has doubled the reduction qualifying property owners receive on their tax bills.
However, this expanded relief comes with a significant caveat: the state will not reimburse the additional rollback portion. Consequently, local schools and community agencies will experience reduced funding beginning with the 2026 collection year.
District Response and Fiscal Planning
Huron City Schools will adjust budget allocations and spending priorities to accommodate this funding reduction while maintaining our commitment to educational excellence. Our goal is to implement these changes strategically, avoiding the need to accelerate the timeline for a new operating levy.
The area most significantly affected will be funding previously allocated for facility improvements. These infrastructure projects remain priorities, and the district anticipates seeking community support through a future bond issue dedicated specifically to facility needs.
Looking Ahead
State legislators continue deliberating additional funding modifications, which we monitor closely. Throughout these changes, our mission remains constant: providing high-quality educational opportunities while respecting the financial realities facing the families we serve.
