Office of Exceptional Children

Empowering Every Learner, Every Day

The Office of Exceptional Learning brings together curriculum, instruction, special education, gifted services, and student support under one roof, because every student's path to success looks a little different, and our job is to meet them on it.

This office oversees the programs, resources, and staff supports that help every Huron student, from early learners through graduating seniors, access rigorous, relevant instruction and the individualized services they may need along the way.

What We Oversee

  • Curriculum & Instruction: Aligning teaching practices to Ohio's Learning Standards, supporting educators with coaching and professional development, and guiding data-informed instruction.
  • Special Education: Ensuring every student with a disability receives a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), from Child Find through IEP services.
  • Gifted Education: Identifying and supporting advanced learners through screening, enrichment, and accelerated coursework.
  • Student Services: Coordinating 504 plans, McKinney-Vento supports, and connections to counseling and community resources.
  • Title I: Providing targeted academic support and family engagement for eligible students.
  • Learning Resources: Building-specific digital tools and platforms to support learning at school and at home.

Personalized Learning and Support Programs

  • We're dedicated to supporting students who show exceptional ability in academics and cognition. Our Gifted Services provide enriched learning experiences, accelerated curriculum, and specialized support to help advanced learners thrive.

    What to Expect
Gifted identification and services begin with a proactive approach to screening and support:

    • Whole-grade screening occurs annually each spring for all 2nd and 4th-grade students in the areas of Superior Cognitive Ability, Reading, and Math.
    • Referral for Gifted Identification Forms may be submitted twice each year (September 1 through 30 and May 1 through 30). Identified students are offered enrichment and support services tailored to their strengths and interests.

    Services and Opportunities
Our licensed Gifted Intervention Specialists provide direct services and enrichment opportunities for students identified in Reading, Math, and/or Superior Cognition in grades 3–6. Students may also benefit from:

    • Advanced, accelerated, and differentiated curriculum
    • Countywide academic opportunities (e.g., 8th Grade Land Use Debate)
    • College Credit Plus courses through partner colleges and universities
    • Advanced Placement (AP) courses at the high school level

    Resources for Families
Stay informed and engaged with guidance and policies supporting gifted education:

  • We're committed to providing an inclusive, high-quality educational experience for every student. What Is Special Education?
Special Education refers to specially designed instruction, support, and services for students with identified disabilities. These programs are tailored to meet each student's unique learning needs and are provided at no cost as part of a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

    What Is Child Find?
Child Find is a legal requirement that schools identify, locate, and evaluate children who may need special education and related services. This applies to all children from birth through age 21 who may have a disability.

    • Birth to Age 3: A physical or mental condition that may result in a developmental delay.
Contact: Erie County Help Me Grow, 419-502-4139
    • Ages 3 to 5: A documented delay in one or more areas of development, including communication, vision, hearing, motor skills, social-emotional/behavioral development, self-help skills, or cognitive abilities.
    • Ages 5 to 21: One or more of the following disabilities may qualify a student for services: specific learning disability, autism, cognitive disability, emotional disturbance, speech or language impairment, visual or hearing impairment, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities, or deaf-blindness.
